Tampa, Fla. – January 22, 2013 – Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Tampa Shareholder Sylvia H. Walbolt received the 2013 Chambers Women in Law Award for Litigation Lawyer of the Year from Chambers & Partners USA on January 15, 2013 at the Harvard Club in New York City.
Chambers Women in Law Awards are the most comprehensive national awards for female lawyers in the U.S. The awards recognize outstanding performances by female lawyers in private practice and in-house in various practice areas. The awards also recognize firms and companies that have excelled in introducing gender diversity and mentoring initiatives that have made a significant difference to the retention and promotion of female legal talent. All private practice nominees must be ranked in Chambers USA as a leader in their field.
Chambers & Partners USA said at the awards banquet, “Sylvia is an outstanding litigator and trailblazer in the advancement of women in the law. She pioneered alternative work schedules in the 1960s and was allowed to work part-time after the birth of her first child. She has mentored many female associates and strongly advocates gender-friendly work environments.”
Walbolt has more than 49 years of extensive experience handling appeals in both federal and state courts, and in all areas of the law, including torts, products liability, business disputes, construction law, securities laws, constitutional, insurance, antitrust, and employment law. She has appeared as counsel in numerous published opinions, and also has appeared on behalf of amici curiae in many appeals.
She has frequently presented oral arguments before the Florida Supreme Court and the Eleventh Circuit, as well to the Georgia and Tennessee Supreme Courts.
In addition to working with trial counsel before and during trial to assure the record is preserved for appeal and that in particular, jury instructions are properly handled, she presents case dispositive legal arguments to the trial court, such as motions for summary judgment or directed verdict. Walbolt also works with trial counsel on post-trial motions and presenting those arguments to the trial court.
Walbolt is board certified in Appellate Law by The Florida Bar, and is a former chair of its Appellate Practice Committee. She served as a member of the Florida Supreme Court’s Committee on Standard Jury Instructions (civil), and chaired it as well. She is a former president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. She currently is chair of the College’s Committee for Teaching Trial and Appellate Advocacy.
Walbolt has been listed in Best Lawyers in America, for more than 26 years, and in Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Business Lawyers (Appellate Litigation). She is active in pro bono matters and received honors for such work at both the state and federal level.
