TAMPA, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2013) — The Early Childhood Council (ECC) of Hillsborough County presented its annual awards at a board meeting on Jan. 16 at Maggiano’s in Tampa. Among those honored was the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, the award for which Interim Executive Director Pam Iorio, former Mayor of Tampa, accepted.
Iorio gave an update on the state of the Children’s Board, a government agency that invests in 29 nonprofits throughout Hillsborough County with programs focusing on children prenatal to age 8, including the ECC. She also congratulated the ECC, one of the leading early childhood organizations in the Tampa Bay area, on celebrating 30 years in the community.
The ECC provides information and referral services, prevention and early intervention, and training and advocacy to the community. A key program is the Community Developmental Screening Program, held monthly to screen children under the age of 5 for developmental issues, such as speech and language, vision, hearing, motor skills and cognition problems or delays.
“The ECC’s developmental screenings are so important because we see every child as having such potential in life,” said Iorio. “If we can identify and address problems in children’s early developmental years and get them help through the agencies here to support them, all we can says is, ‘It’s been a job well done.’”
Other award recipients included Jane Murphy, Pat Grosz, Connie Hayden-McPeak, Marian Jones and Brian McEwen, for their continued support and significant contributions to the ECC over the years.
“We are extremely grateful to all our supporters – organizations and individuals alike – who have helped to grow the ECC and improve our ability to better serve children and families in Hillsborough County,” said ECC Executive Director Stephen Martaus. “We look forward to making new connections in the community this year as we engage on our 30th anniversary fundraising campaign throughout 2013.”
