TAMPA, Fla., December 18, 2012 – A group of tenth-graders from Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School recently toured the downtown banking center and corporate offices of Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay), getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into banking. The private tour was part of a two-year financial literacy program in which the students opted to participate, called the Brooks Bunch Business Bootcamp – a collaboration between Fifth Third Bank and Derrick Brooks Charities.
“In our partnership with Derrick Brooks Charities, we’ve committed to providing students with a financial literacy foundation that will serve them for the rest of their lives,” said Brian Lamb, president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay). “Part of that foundation is getting outside of the classroom to experience the ‘real world’ by visualizing the banking process and meeting the bankers involved.”
Accompanied by bank executives, the students first toured the downtown Fifth Third banking center at 201 E. Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa. Banking center manager Charles Thybulle provided an inside glimpse into operations, from teller line to the vault. Business banking relationship managers Joe Bachman and Rich LeComte then led the students through the business banking suite and gave them a primer on the differences between business and consumer banking.
Moving upstairs into the corporate offices of Fifth Third (Tampa Bay), students met regional recruiting manager Jennifer Barone, who explained the hiring process and offered tips on applying and interviewing for finance jobs.
Ending at the top of the building, students gathered in the 20th-floor executive boardroom to meet with Mike Dietz, market mortgage executive, and learn about that side of the business. Other bank executives were available to answer questions and meet the students.
The Brooks Bunch Business Bootcamp program kicked off in October and will continue throughout the school year. The curriculum, designed by Dave Ramsey – personal finance expert and New York Times best-selling author – is titled “Foundations in Personal Finance.” Students learn about savings, investment options, debt, budgeting, mortgages, insurance and other financial empowerment topics. Tony Sasso, membership banking officer at Fifth Third Bank (Tampa Bay), leads the bi-weekly classes, and local business leaders often make guest appearances. Other off-campus job shadow and private tour opportunities are planned for the rest of the school year.
