Southwest FL – At our Annual MOAS Business Meeting the membership elected the 2013 slate of nominated officers (see November Breeze) to include Dee Lovell, who was nominated from the floor to serve as the chapter Secretary. The elected officers and Board will be installed at the Annual Gala on Dec 9th.
Then, Nate Jacobs, Artistic Director of the West Coast Black Theater Troupe, captured the attention of everyone attending our November luncheon at Michaels on East by opening with a vocally unique rendition of Cab Calloway’s “Hi De Ho” song coupled with dialog of “Minnie the Moocher,”
Nate Jacobs is a driving force in Sarasota, Florida’s theater scene. A graduate of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, he is the Founder and Artistic Director of the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe. For more than 25 years, he has worked extensively in the community mentoring, training, and developing young aspiring performing artists. As a result of Nate’s outstanding contributions to young people, the Sarasota County Branch NAACP Youth Council recognized him as one of the 2012 Men of Valor. In the spring of 2013, Nate will be inducted into Sarasota’s Video Archives “Hall of Fame.”
Nate verbally carried us on his journey to where he is today by recalling his growth from a shy, quiet boy who lacked a strong appreciation about who he was and his own self-value, through discovery of his artistic self during and after college. His adult life has been focused on giving talented but financially challenged Black actors the support they needed to attain the next step to a career on stage. His story was remarkable and made us all proud to have such a remarkable mentor and artistic leader in the Sarasota Arts community. The Troupes 2012-2013 program includes Nate Jacobs 50’s Jukebox Revue (through December 16th); August Wilson’s Jitney (January 2nd to February 3rd); Soul Crooners 2 (February 20th to March 24th); and a
musical review, It Ain’t Nothin’ But The Blues (April 10th to May 12th). Season tickets are $75.00 for all performances or individual tickets
are $29.00. If you haven’t seen one or more of Nate’s productions you have missed a real treat.
