|Bradenton, FL…Manatee Glens President/CEO Mary Ruiz will be the featured speaker at the December 4, 2012 New Topics New College lecture series. Her topic, “Courting Prescription Pain Medication: For Better or Worse?” will address the medical, social, economic and political impacts of the prescription pain pill epidemic. With 25 years of experience at Manatee Glens, the area’s leading mental health an addictions specialty hospital and outpatient practice, she is well-versed on the subject.
“While pain medications are a life-saver for some, they can become an addiction for others. I am personally and professionally committed to raising awareness of and finding solutions for this pervasive and destructive societal problem,” stated Ruiz. “We lose seven people each day to this epidemic. Fortunately, Sarasota and Manatee are statewide and national leaders in addressing Safe Prescribing.” Ruiz is a New College alumna and also a member of the New College Board of Trustees.
“Our survey of lecture attendees last spring showed that their number one requested subject was medical issues. Mary Ruiz was our first choice to address this important topic, explained Associate Director of Community Outreach and Marketing Marty Katz. “It’s also important to New College that we feature our alums.”
The lecture will be held in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion, 5313 Bay Shore Road at 5:30 pm. The cost is $15 and reservations are available at donate.ncf.edu/newtopics. . There is a reception immediately following.
