Starting Jan. 18, the weekly newspaper for business leaders will be the Business Observer.
SARASOTA — Gulf Coast Business Review, the weekly newspaper for business leaders covering Tampa to Naples, is changing its name. Effective Jan. 18, it will be known as the Business Observer.
There are several reasons for the new name. For one, it will bring the newspaper’s name in line with its parent company, Sarasota-based The Observer Media Group Inc. In addition to publishing what has been the Gulf Coast Business Review, the Observer Media Group publishes the Sarasota Observer, Longboat Observer, East County Observer and Pelican Press in greater Sarasota; the Plant City Observer; the Palm Coast Observer; and the Ormond Beach Observer. Several of these papers have been recognized repeatedly for general excellence by the Florida Press Association.
The name change will also help avoid name confusion of the paper’s coverage area. “The words ‘Gulf Coast’ mean something different depending on where you live and have caused us to be confused with other publications with similar names,” says Matt Walsh, editor and CEO of the Business Review and the Observer Media Group. “The Business Observer name allows us to differentiate ourselves more clearly in the markets we serve.”
The name is part of a catalyst of change that includes a fresh design in print and a new website that will reinforce and focus the newspaper’s mission on providing business news and information in a compelling, relevant and interesting way.
Walsh says the best news about the change is, although the look and the name of the paper will change, its foundation — the award-winning content and a loyal following supporting free markets and those who capitalize on them — will not.
“Our name may be different, but our goal remains the same,” Walsh says. “We will continue to provide readers with the most authoritative news and information business leaders need to know.”
