(Sarasota, FL) Tom Savage, president of the Sarasota Public Art Fund, announced yesterday at a “Capping Off Party” hosted by Season of Sculpture, that the organization had reached its goal of $550,000 to purchase “Complexus,” a monumental work by the Tennessee-based sculptor John Henry. The 70-foot tall, bold and bright red steel sculpture, located at the corner of U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue in downtown Sarasota, was the star of the show at the 2011-2012 Season of Sculpture’s outdoor sculpture exhibition.
According to Savage, the funds were raised over the period of less than a year.
“Public art helps define a community,” says Savage. “Art in public view plays a vital role in a city’s appeal, quality of life and economic viability. That’s why so many of us were extremely motivated to keep ‘Complexus’ in Sarasota. This signature work by the renowned sculptor, John Henry, has become a spectacular part of our cityscape and adds an important element to Sarasota’s rich cultural tapestry.”
At the event at Home Resource, Susan McLeod, president of Season of Sculpture, thanked the community for its strong support of this campaign. “We think this overwhelming show of support reflects the enthusiasm area residents have for this significant work of art—and for the idea of public art in general. We’re thrilled, encouraged—and absolutely inspired to begin our next exhibition!”
Established in 2007, the Public Art Fund is a non-profit organization that raises funds to purchase art by established and emerging artists for public and private placement. According to Savage, the original price tag for “Complexus” was $850,000 but Henry agreed to a significant price reduction in light of the nature of the acquisition. The sculpture will be gifted to the city of Sarasota as a permanent part of its art collection at a public ceremony in January 2013.
