Solar panels are among the facility’s sustainability features
Tampa, FL – A Port Charlotte, Florida public-building project by Mathews/Taylor, a subsidiary of Hardin Construction Company, has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the nation’s leading evaluator of environmentally sustainable buildings.
The single-story, 12,500-square-foot Charlotte County Human Services Building, which combines office and medical treatment spaces, is Charlotte County’s first LEED certified building.
The building is partially powered by an 11.5 kw, ground-mounted solar electric system, installed adjacent to the building and capable of providing 5% of the facility’s total electric load.
The project’s other environment-friendly building features and construction methods include: use of 100 percent outside air, as all HVAC systems use Energy Recovery ventilators; recycling of nearly 80 percent of construction waste, therefore diverting materials from area landfills; use of regional plants only, which allowed for deletion of all permanent irrigation systems from the plans.
Known for its expertise in green building and for obtaining LEED certifications for its clients, Hardin Construction is ranked among the top green builders in the southeast.
The Charlotte County project’s architect of record is Wilder Architecture.
The facility includes 7,500 square feet of office space and a 5,000-square-foot health clinic with lab and x-ray facilities. The project completed in early 2012.
