What: Mayors’ Feed the Hungry – Thanksgiving Food Drive
Why: Wondering where our next meal is coming from is something most of us never have to worry about. However, for many it’s a constant concern. “We are issuing a call to action to our schools, businesses and organizations to lend a helping hand,” urges Joel Swallow, Chairman of the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program. “Please donate food and help make sure that no adult or child in Manatee or Sarasota County will go hungry this holiday season in our local communities”.
The mayors of Bradenton, Palmetto, Sarasota, Venice, Longboat Key, the Chairman of the North Port City Council, the Manatee and Sarasota County Commission Chairpersons all endorse this effort to feed the hungry in our local area.
When: Food collection will be November 5th – 16th, 2012. The food drive culminates on Nov. 16th at the Baltimore Orioles Spring Training site at Ed Smith Stadium from 1:00 – 5:00 where the food will be sorted and distributed to food pantries free of charge throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties. In the North Port area food will be taken to Cranberry Elementary School and distributed on Nov. 17th.
Where: Food to be donated can be taken to collection boxes at: The Baltimore Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium; all Coldwell Banker offices in Sarasota & Manatee; City Halls or Police Stations in Palmetto, Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice and North Port – or food can be dropped off at any participating school in Manatee or Sarasota County Nov. 5th – 16th.
Who: Any organization, business, school, club, community association, place of worship, etc. is encouraged to collect food. The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry volunteers will provide collection boxes and signs.
How: Mayors’ Feed the Hungry volunteers will deliver empty boxes during the first week in November. We ask that you fill them up with non-perishable food items (no glass). Volunteers will pick up the food on Nov. 16th and take it to be sorted. At the end of the day the food will be given to local food pantries operated by Mayors’ Feed the Hungry volunteers. All the food will be given away FREE to hungry people in time for Thanksgiving.
Background: The Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program is an all volunteer organization. It was started in 1987 by the Mayor of Sarasota and has grown over the years to include all the mayors and government leaders in Sarasota and Manatee counties. It is comprised of charitable groups, religious institutions, service agencies, and concerned citizens who desire to serve the community.
