Successful health and research informatics platform recognized
TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2012) – Moffitt Cancer Center has been named a Ventana Research 2012 Leadership Awards recipient for Business Technology. The Leadership Awards recognize organizations that distinguish their approach to business through the progressive use of information technology. Moffitt is being honored in the Big Data category for its successful health and research informatics platform overseen by Mark Hulse, R.N, vice president of Information Technology and chief information officer, and Dana Rollison, Ph.D., vice president/chief health information officer and member of the Cancer Epidemiology Program.
“Cancer treatment and research are continually evolving. Our health and research informatics platform, which utilizes Oracle, Informatica and TransMed systems, allows Moffitt to accelerate clinical trial patient recruitment and advance personalized medicine,” Hulse said. “We are honored to be recognized for our integration of technology with patient care and research to improve outcomes.”
The health and research informatics program supports Moffitt’s Total Cancer Care® program by generating new intelligence from existing systems. It securely synthesizes data from numerous clinical sources, a state-of-the-art biobank and patient-reported information.
“The integration of patient clinical and self-reported data with information derived from the patients’ tumor tissues is complex from both a technology and scientific perspective,” Rollison added. “The ability to query across multiple domains simultaneously facilitates many types of research, including biomarker discovery, epidemiologic studies and comparative effectiveness research.”
Each organization nominated for a Ventana Research Leadership Award is evaluated and scored for its use of people, processes, information and technology, as well as best practices, the degree of team involvement, and the project’s business impact and value.
“This is the largest industry technology awards to date with over 26 awards honoring individuals and organizations of all industries and sizes from across the world that have distinguished themselves in their approach to using software and technology,” said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. “We congratulate Moffitt on receiving this distinguished award.”
Leadership Awards will be presented at a gala held during the Ventana Research Business Technology Innovation Summit on Nov. 8 in San Jose, Calif.
