|1 Hour Heritage History Segway Tour
Segs by the Sea is proud to announce its newest tour, the 1 Hour Heritage History Segway Tour. Step aboard our I2 Segways as we undertake a voyage in time and tradition. The tour begins at Segs by the Sea’s Shop on Historic Bridge Street. From there we cruise over the Cortez Bridge. Built in 1957, the drawbridge will connect us to the mainland. Our gliding port of call is somewhere in the past, but the harbor is a modern museum facility. The museum is housed in the restored historic 1912 Schoolhouse located on the park like grounds of the Cortez Nature Preserve. Here you will find, displayed for your delight, pieces of the almost forgotten past. At the Florida Maritime Museum at Cortez gaze upon the Banks Shell collection, ship models, historic boats and a surprise butterfly garden.
After a tour of the museum, we will segway around Cortez, the oldest Gulf coast commercial fishing village that was founded by settlers from North Carolina in the 1880s. The Preserve is also located here. Encompassing over 100 acres of environmentally sensitive land immediately east of Cortez, for hundreds of years this site has survived as an important fisheries habitat for the section of Sarasota Bay south of Cortez fondly referred to as “the kitchen.” It was here the locals could find a bounty of fresh seafood to feed their families and trade with their farmer neighbors. After taking in these historic sites, we will glide back over the Cortez Bridge to Historic Bridge Street. Learning the history of this area will make you appreciate the beauty and resources of Florida’s historic Gulf Coast.
