ST. PETERSBURG, FL – OCTOBER 31, 2012 – The 15th anniversary of The Yerrid Foundation Grand Slam Celebrity Fishing Tournament presented by Bonefish Grill brought together celebrities and anglers from across the country for a weekend of competitive fishing and most importantly, the opportunity to reel in a cure. Proceeds from the tournament held October 19-21 at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg will fund critical research to find a cure for childhood cancer.
Celebrities in attendance at the tournament included Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, accomplished angler Stu Apte, Special Agent Eric Littlejohn, Professional Tarpon Tournament Series Host Joe Mercurio, and expert fishing guide, author, and television host Captain Bill Miller.
On Friday morning at The Steve Yerrid Kid’s Fishing Derby, sponsors, anglers, and celebrities joined over 125 kids for a parade, activities, fishing, and awards.
On Friday evening at The Fishermen’s Ball presented by Firestone Complete Auto Care, Tires Plus, ExpertTire, Wheel Works, and Credit First, N.A., Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC (BSRO) presented a check to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation for $500,000. For three years, BSRO employees and its 2,200 retail locations nationwide, including Firestone Complete Auto Care, ExpertTire, Tires Plus, and Wheel Works, have supported the efforts of PCF through a program that offers customers the opportunity to round up their transactions to the nearest dollar for PCF.
“Our employees and our customers have been touched by the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and embraced it beyond our wildest dreams. Who can argue with wanting to eradicate childhood cancer?” said Matt Hoskins, President, BSRO.
The great weather translated into a phenomenal weekend of fishing. Steve Yerrid, Wade Boggs, and Frank Perri reeled in a grand slam of redfish, snook, and trout on the waters of Tampa Bay. Guided by Captain T.J. Stewart, they caught a total of 92.25 inches to become the overall winner in the catch and release tournament. Captain Ray Van Horn received the Lucky Strike Award, which recognizes a tournament guide who displays excellent character, quality service, and a commitment to finding a cure for pediatric cancer.
In other honors, Wade Davis, Tampa Bay Rays Pitcher, received the Ted Williams Award which honors individuals whose love of the great outdoors is only surpassed by their commitment to making a difference in the community. Bridgestone Retail Operations received the Corporate Partner of the Year Award for its tremendous support of PCF since 2010. PP+K received the Breakthrough Award for generously donating an ad campaign to PCF called “Breakthrough” which draws attention to the barriers standing in the way of a cure. Their team put their heart into the cause and developed groundbreaking print ads, brochures, in-store collateral, and wrote a song for PCF that details the battle against childhood cancer through the eyes of a child. Steve Yerrid received the Community Partner Award for his compassion and dedication to PCF for over the past 15 years.
“Steve Yerrid’s sponsorship of the Grand Slam Celebrity Fishing Tournament and the Kid’s Derby only begins to scratch the surface when it comes to how this hero has given his time, money, and most of all, his heart. We are so grateful for his continued support.” said Nancy Crane, Executive Director, PCF.
