SARASOTA, Fla. – October 24, 2012 – Inspired by the rich heritage that Florida’s Gulf Coast shares with the Ringling Brothers’ Circus, The Sarasota Ballet has created a circus-themed production of the classic holiday favorite The Nutcracker. Following Hoffmann’s memorable storyline and using the traditional Tchaikovsky score, the John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker makes its world-premiere this December.
Set to live music, performed by the Sarasota Orchestra, John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker will be performed at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and at Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall for a total of six performances.
With international chorographer Matthew Hart’s incredible imagination and set and costume designs by award-winning designer Peter Docherty, this world-premiere ballet pays homage to the 1920s and 1930s, when the Ringling Circus was at its height.
“We wanted to create a new and different Nutcracker experience,” said Iain Webb, Director of The Sarasota Ballet. “And what better way than to create a ballet based on the unique ties that Florida has with the circus.”
Set in New York City in the stylish art deco period, the freely-adopted story follows the fantasy of a little girl (Clara) as she runs away to join the Ringling Circus in Sarasota, Florida. Reimagining recognizable characters from the 120-year-old ballet as celebrated and historic circus figures, John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker intertwines history, dance and imagination.
With rehearsals underway, elaborate sets being constructed and more than 100 costumes being fitted and hand-crafted by the Asolo Repertory Theatre costume shop, gearing up for this tailor-made world-premiere has proven to be one of largest productions in The Sarasota Ballet’s history.
“It’s exciting for us to be able to create a production of this caliber and size. This production creatively showcases the circus’ roots in Florida and is something everyone can enjoy,” said Mary Anne Servian, Managing Director of the Sarasota Ballet.
“For me, this world premiere is an exciting project.” said Webb. “It is our way of saying thank you to the many supporters that have stood by us. It’s the perfect holiday present.”
