What: Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists presents the Seventh Annual Griot Drum Awards and Scholarships Banquet. The ceremony will be hosted by Ernest Hooper, Brandon Bureau Chief of the Tampa Bay Times.
The Griot Drum Awards will feature a question and answer panel discussion by Tampa Bay news anchors: Erica Riggins, Bay News 9; Reginald Roundtree, WTSP 10 News; and Josh Thomas, News Channel 8. Eric Deggans of the Tampa Bay Times will moderate the panel. Several topics open for discussion include how the media has covered diversity issues such as the Trayvon Martin case, upcoming elections and other high-profile cases involving people of color.
Past Griot Drum speakers include: CNN anchor Don Lemon, ESPN’s Jemele Hill, former CBS Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler, and 60 Minutes correspondent Byron Pitts.
When: Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Nielsen Company, 501 Brooker Creek Blvd., Oldsmar, FL 33647. A reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the panel discussion and awards program immediately following.
Why: TBABJ will award nearly $5,000 in college scholarships to students studying journalism and communications, along with approximately two dozen awards to local journalists who have excelled in covering people of color. More information about the scholarship program is available at TBABJ.com.
