SMR Farms is Tropicana Grower of the Year
SMR Farms has once again been selected as a Tropicana Grower of the Year for the 2011-2012 citrus harvesting season. This is the fourth year in a row that SMR Farms has received this designation from Tropicana Products, Inc. The Grower of the Year award is based on fruit quality, load quality, fruit variety mix and agribusiness management. The management practices component of the award looks at harvesting methods, grove practices, labor programs and commitment to agricultural sustainability.
SMR Farms currently is partnering with Tropicana on a multi-year citrus fertilization project aimed at comparing traditional fertilizers with low-carbon-footprint products as part of Tropicana’s widely-acclaimed global sustainability efforts.
“We value very highly our long-time relationship with Tropicana, and certainly appreciate this recognition” said SMR Farms President, Mac Carraway. According to Steve John, SMR Farms Citrus Production Manager, “Working with Tropicana is great. Their standards are very high and we work hard to meet those standards every day, which is tough with the many challenges facing Florida citrus producers these days.”
Other growers receiving the award are Bentley Brothers, Inc. (Winter Haven), Pines Ranch, Inc. (Lorida) and Sunny South Packing Company, Inc. (Arcadia).
SMR Farms’ Mac Carraway Named 2012 AgVocate by Ag Institute
The Agriculture Institute of Florida (www.aifflorida.org) announced that Mac Carraway, President of SMR Farms in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, has been named its 2012 AgVocate. This award is given to an individual who has been an especially involved and effective communicator on behalf of Florida agriculture over the past year. Carraway’s selection was based on his ongoing statewide involvement in the policy debate regarding urban fertilizer and water quality.
“This was a really nice surprise, and is especially rewarding coming from the Ag Institute. It is an excellent group of highly dedicated ag communications professionals” said Carraway. “This award really belongs to an army of green industries representatives who are committed to protecting Florida’s water quality, and who are fighting for science-based urban fertilizer policy every single day.”
Carraway is currently the Chairman of the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Ag Advisory Committee, a Director of the Florida Sod Growers Cooperative, and a recent past president of the Florida Turfgrass Association.
