Partnership with Ponce School of Medicine & Health Sciences focused on improving outcomes
TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 19, 2012) – Moffitt Cancer Center and the Ponce School of Medicine & Health Sciences have each received a $7 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to work together to eliminate cancer-related health disparities affecting Hispanics.
“Moffitt has had a partnership with the Ponce School of Medicine for the past eight years. However, this grant will help strengthen the relationship between the two institutions and, more importantly, perform research that will help the Hispanic community,” said Teresita Muñoz-Antonia, Ph.D., associate member of Moffitt’s Department of Molecular Oncology.
The five-year grant is supported by the NCI’s Comprehensive Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity. The focus will be to develop and improve cancer care outcomes for Hispanic cancer patients in Puerto Rico and Florida who are underserved with respect to cancer care, personalized medicine and participation in clinical research.
Muñoz-Antonia and W. J. Pledger, Ph.D., will serve as Moffitt’s principal investigators for this grant. Other Moffitt investigators include Alvaro N.A. Monteiro, Ph.D., and W. Douglas Cress, Ph.D., for basic science research projects; Gwendolyn P. Quinn, Ph.D., for outreach; Kenneth L. Wright, Ph.D., and Scott J.
