|On October 19th, 2012, Longboat Key resident Richard Carrier, 53 yrs, was awarded $2.3 million dollars, by a jury, for injuries sustained in an accident that occurred on March 27th, 2010.
Mr. Carrier was riding his bicycle on Longboat Key when he was struck by a motor vehicle at the 6700 block of Gulf of Mexico Dr. The driver was Edward O’Connell, 82 yrs, visiting from Rome, New York. Mr. O’Connell was making a left hand turn across the northbound lane of Gulf of Mexico Dr. when he crashed into Mr. Carrier in the bike lane.
A jury found that Mr. Carrier sustained permanent injuries to his head, eye, neck, shoulder and low back that could not have been prevented had he been wearing a helmet.
Scott Kallins and Melton Little, co-counsel for Mr. Carrier, stated, “We are very happy for our client and the jury’s consideration of his damages.”
The trial that began on Monday, October 15th was presided over by the honorable Judge Janet Dunnigan in Manatee County; opposing counsel was Emory Woods & Assoc.
