Girls are preparing for Election Day at Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County. The citizens of Dream Harbor are electing their mayor, vice-mayor, a secretary/historian and a treasurer. Dream Harbor is the name part of Girls Inc.’s Microsociety® program where girls run their own city and serve as peacekeepers, bankers, postal carriers, caterers, reporters and athletes.
Girls running in this years’ election will be preparing for office by speaking to their constituents within Girls Inc. and by displaying campaign signs. Visits from Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson (October 16), Sarasota City Commissioner Carolyn Mason (October 17), City of Sarasota Mayor Suzanne Atwell (October 18) and Senator Nancy Detert (October 22) are scheduled to help prepare the girls for this years’ campaign season. Visits will be from 4-5:30 each day.
The 2012 Dream Harbor election is part of a national Girls Inc. program called She Votes which empowers girls to envision themselves as future voters, candidates, and officeholders. This engagement also involves girls early so that they will be more likely to vote and be active citizens as adults.
Tuesday, November 6, 2012 is Election Day within Dream Harbor at Girls Inc. located at 201 S. Tuttle Avenue. Voting will take place from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.
