TAMPA — The Hillsborough Democratic Party released the following statement today regarding the death of the honorable Sam Gibbons:
Sam Gibbons was – and will always be – a most eminent son of Hillsborough County. Throughout his long life, he was a model of service, American ideals, and likability. As a young paratrooper he was part of securing the D-Day beachhead that led to victory in World War II. As a Florida legislator in Tallahassee he played a pivotal role in founding the University of South Florida, seeing it was located in Tampa where it is now one of America’s top public research universities. As a US Congressman he affected the lives of virtually every citizen through his advocacy for poverty programs and Medicare, his decision to vote “aye” on the Voting Rights Act, and his leadership in pasing trade agreements such as NAFTA. The work and dedication of Sam Gibbons was a gift to us all. Heaven’s gain is our profound loss; his service on behalf of all Americans must not be forgotten.
