The Mosaic Company has contributed $89,500 to Feeding America Tampa Bay as an outgrowth of its Home Runs for Food partnership with the Rays. Under the program, which began with the Rays 2010 season, Mosaic contributes $500 to the food bank for every home run hit by Rays players during their regular season games. The 2012 season contribution brings the total generated for Feeding America to $260,000 in the three years since the program’s inception.
“The $260,000 Mosaic has contributed to our organization has helped keep our trucks on the road and our food donations increasing by 20 percent in the last two years, making it possible for us to provide the food necessary to meet the growing demand from hungry families in our communities. “ said Pat Rogers, the food bank’s Executive Director. “We are grateful to Mosaic and the Rays for this great partnership, which means so much to us. And, as always, we thank the Rays players for hitting so many home runs!”
“Mosaic is a true leader in our community and it is a privilege to support and celebrate their commitment to Feeding America Tampa Bay,” said Rays Senior Vice President Mark Fernandez.
“The Home Runs for Food program is a natural extension of Mosaic’s mission, which is to help the world grow the food it needs,” said Bo Davis, Mosaic Senior Vice President of Phosphate Operations. “Our shared relationship with the Rays and Feeding America Tampa Bay is rewarding to all of us.”
According to a 2010 USDA report on food insecurity, one in six Americans is at risk of hunger. Our youngest citizens’ fate is worse, with one in four children considered at risk for hunger. In the Tampa Bay area, nearly 700,000 of our neighbors struggle with hunger – 250,000 of them children. Feeding America Tampa Bay distributes more than 1.5 million meals every month to help meet that need.
Mosaic is committed to investing at least one percent of its profits into its communities globally. Over the past year Mosaic and its Foundation have donated more than $8.4 million to community organizations focused on Central Florida. The Mosaic Company, through its Florida-based subsidiary Mosaic Fertilizer, LLC, is the world’s leading producer of phosphate crop nutrients. America’s farmers rely on Florida phosphate to help grow their food crops. Phosphate is a natural product for which there is no man-made substitute, making phosphate reserves in Florida of strategic importance to critical sectors of the state and national economy, including farming, manufacturing, shipping, trucking and rail. Mosaic employs more than 3,000 Central Florida residents, and tens of thousands of Floridians work in other jobs dependent upon the industry. For more information, go to www.mosaicfla.com.
