Pasco/Pinellas/Hillsborough County, Florida – (October 4, 2012) Medical Center of Trinity has announced that “Helping HANDs” (offering Hope for Autism and Neurological Disorders) will not meet on its regularly scheduled date in October. Helping HANDS
Is a community support group for parents, family members, and friends impacted by autism and related neurological disorders such as Tourette’s, Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD, Aspergers, or other Autism Spectrum disorders.
The October meeting date has been changed to the third Wednesday, October 17 at 7 pm. The group meets at Medical Center of Trinity, 9330 State Road 54, Trinity, Florida 34655.
The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at USF (CARD) will make a special presentation to the group. Susan Richmond, CARD consultant, will provide an overview of CARD services with a more in-depth discussion on a wide range of topics. These topics were issues raised within group meetings and emails. Topics will include:
· Ideas on after school/social activities
· Ideas to help children with more physical activity
· Transition services for older children graduating high school and going to college
· Helpful information on transition to adulthood – jobs, social activities, legal advice, disabled guardianship
· Tips to help deal with the difficult “teenage years”
· More education on Tourette’s and other related disabilities
· Special schools & programs available
· Question and Answer session

Relatives and family members impacted by Autism and Related Neurological Disorders have an opportunity to meet with parents with similar issues at the regular monthly meetings. The primary goal is to connect special needs families by bringing the community together to support, each other, gain more knowledge, raise awareness, and pool resources to effectively help the children.
