The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence – www.walkamileinhershoes.org
TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 3, 2012) – Inspired by the idea that you cannot truly understand the experiences of others until you have walked a mile in their shoes, men from the University of South Florida and the surrounding community will proclaim their solidarity to end violence against women by marching in high heels and participating in USF’s 5th Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, sponsored by the student organization N.I.T.E. (Network, Improve, Transform, Empower).
WHO: Male students, staff, faculty and community members, with women marching at their side
WHEN: Friday, Oct. 12, 12 p.m.
WHERE: USF Tampa Campus, Marshall Student Center Amphitheater
WHY: In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Male participants are invited (but not required) to walk in women’s shoes. Men and women are encouraged to bring shoes for use in the event; a limited number of women’s shoes will be provided to men on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to the march, participants will hear from our special guest, Audrey Mabrey, and men will take the REAL (Relationship Equality and Anti-violence League) Men’s Promise. The Promise is a commitment for men to stand up against violence towards women and the culture that supports it. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® will conclude with a celebration that includes music, games, and contests.
Speaking at Walk a Mile will be local domestic violence survivor and advocate Audrey Mabrey. Audrey is a courageous young woman whose life was forever changed after her estranged husband viciously attempted to murder her by bludgeoning her in the head with a hammer and setting her on fire in 2009. Audrey’s personal experience of violence and her activism on behalf of other survivors demonstrates the importance of men joining with women to make a commitment to end violence against women.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is an educational, empowering, and unique event sponsored by N.I.T.E. with support from the USF Center for Victim Advocacy and Violence Prevention, USF Athletics, USF ROTC, Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County, Vistra Communications, Café Kili, USF Police, and USF Student Government.
