[Longboat Key, FL – October 3, 2012] The premiere regional Triathlon and Duathlon race will take place on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the Islandside Golf Course at Longboat Key Club & Resort. Renowned for the spectacular and challenging setting, the race is the second in the International Triathlon and Duathlon race series which is owned by the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and promoted by TDA Global Sports. On-site registration for the race will be held at the same location on Saturday, October 27, 2012, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
The Triathlon was formally permitted by the Town of Longboat Key at the request of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce in 2010. Now in its third year, the Chamber, which benefits from the event, provides marketing expertise and solicits the large contingent of volunteer staffing that is needed on race day.
The race features a half-mile swim in the lagoon adjacent to Longboat Key Club & Resort, followed by a twenty mile bike along Gulf of Mexico Drive, and a five mile run that winds through the resort’s Islandside Golf Course. A few adjustments have been made to the course layout this year to facilitate smooth transitions. Participants may also select the Duathlon option, which consists of a two mile run, a twenty mile bike and a finishing five mile run.
New this year, a pre-race clinic given by local triathlon race coach, Eric Kahl, offers a course overview, tips on how to successfully and safely complete the race and guidance on USAT rules & regulations. He will also give information on registration procedures, equipment, timing chips, penalties and transitioning advice. Tips on avoiding common mistakes and what to do if certain situations arise while out on the course will also be part of the clinic.
There will be no race day registration, so be sure to pre-register, or attend the October 27th event. Packet pick-up will also be available that day. For those athletes coming from out-of-town, packet pick-up will be taking place starting at 6 am on Sunday, October 28th. Photo-ID and proof of current USAT membership will be required. A one day license may be purchased for the event.
The highly popular race is expected to attract between 400 and 500 participants this year.
“As one of the premiere sporting events in the region, the LBK Triathlon is an example of how public and private partnerships can create offerings that build expectations and enhance regional growth,” said Michael Welly, General Manager of Longboat Key Club & Resort. “As a benefit for the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and one of the main sporting events promoted by TDA Global Sports, a Sarasota based company, it is a great opportunity to drive awareness for the region’s versatile economic capabilities from sporting events to a world-class hospitality destination.”
“The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be part of this effort, which brings a high quality competitive athletic event to the Key. We are appreciative of the permission and cooperation of the Town and its citizens, and the beauty, high service quality and historically strong commitment of Longboat Key Club & Resort. We are also grateful for the very capable event management by TDA Global Sports,” said Tom Aposporos, President of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce.
TDA Global Sports has partnered with SBS Global, a national sponsorship and sports marketing company, to continue to enhance the growth of the race through select sponsorship opportunities.
“We are excited to once again be hosting the third annual International Triathlon and Duathlon at the Longboat Key Club & Resort – an iconic race at an iconic location,” said Tony Driscoll, President of TDA Global Sports. “We are looking forward to the continued growth of the race, and to that end have partnered with SBS Global, a national sponsorship and sports marketing company, to accelerate the reach of the race and bring it to a level of national prominence through enhanced sponsorship support.”
