Following a growing trend of Corporations leaving the Golden State, the highly successful small chain of discount pottery, plant and home decor stores from Southern California called Mainly Seconds – Pottery, Plants & Things, is bringing its thirty year proven formula to Sarasota, Florida under the new banner of Plants & Treasures – Houseplants, Pottery, Gifts & More.
Mike Bonk, owner and President of MSOC, Inc. has chosen to re-create the success of his Orange County based Southern California operation on Florida’s Suncoast. As a full-time Sarasota resident for the past two years, Mike has been traveling back and forth cross-country coordinating the closure of his final two, of seven, Southern California locations. Having closed the final store in May of this year, plans immediately got underway to establish the first Plants & Treasures location here, in Sarasota.
The new Plants & Treasures, located at 7942 N. Tamiami Trail, one mile north of The Ringling Museum, will offer value pricing on florist quality houseplants, a huge selection of indoor and outdoor pottery, a wide variety of home and garden accessories, a unique selection of gift items and a mix of general merchandise close-outs. With 6,000 square feet of interior floor space and a 2,000 square foot attached outdoor pottery yard, the new “retail sanctuary” will bring to Sarasota a shopping experience unlike anything else in town. Plants & Treasures will offer free transplanting with any plant or pottery purchase and will also provide exceptional customer service, a friendly and knowledgeable staff and recognizable low pricing on a big selection of great, quality merchandise.
Plants & Treasures is owned and operated by Mike Bonk and his wife Maria Marin-Bonk, who was a successful Manufacturers Representative in the Southern California home furnishings industry for seventeen years. Mike and Maria, who were eager to leave California, followed in the footsteps of Maria’s brother, Ed Marin, who relocated his fifty year old California-based manufacturing business, Soicher Marin, Inc., to Sarasota in 2009. In August of 2010, Mike and Maria permanently relocated to Siesta Key.
Helping pioneer the new retail venture is Rick Navarro, Mike’s General Manager and right hand man of twenty years at MSOC, Inc. Together, the three create an exceptional team, highly skilled in purchasing, display, marketing and operations.
The Grand Opening will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Store hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:00 to 6:00 on Sundays.
