Tampa, FL – State Farm has awarded Hillsborough Community College a Youth Advisory Board grant for its Tampa Bay Drifter program. Grants were awarded based on innovative service-learning practices, a deep connection to classroom curriculum and connection to the community.
“We are delighted to be a recipient of this State Farm grant,” said Dr. Ken Atwater, HCC president. “Education and research is essential to protect our precious natural resources and the Tampa Bay watershed is among our most important.”
The drifter program is a year-long experience through HCC’s Institute for Florida Studies (IFS). The program engages students and teachers in educational activities combining service learning with environmental education and research while leveraging technology to provide a rigorous education experience.
“State Farm supports service-learning because it integrates service to the community into classroom curriculum using a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic responsibility,” said Jose Soto, State Farm Community Specialist. “The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a prime example of State Farm’s commitment to education, our community and our youth.”
Participants will build and deploy ocean drifters which track progress and upload data to a website that can then be viewed by the community. IFS is partnering with Terrace Community Middle School to implement the project. Students will also learn about and research the Tampa Bay watershed and environmental issues impacting Florida.
A check presentation will take place at the HCC Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, September 27 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the SouthShore Campus, Dickman Community Center, 551 24th Street, NE, Ruskin.
