SARASOTA, Fla. (April 5, 2017) – Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 273 students who will make up the organization’s 2017 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Corinne Tucker. Tucker is one of just 16 students from Florida to earn the designation and the only student within the USF System. She is a dedicated fourth-year psychology student involved in many extra-curricular activities on behalf of women’s rights and education equity on and off campus. For the past two years, Tucker has held leadership positions in the American Association of University Women (AAUW)-USFSM, a student organization dedicated to championing social justice and women’s equity issues on campus and in the community. Additionally, she has worked closely with the Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading, a nonprofit organization that advocates for children’s reading proficiency by third grade, especially in children from lower-income neighborhoods. Tucker’s enthusiasm is contagious as she inspires other students to support social justice and educational issues as well. Kati Hinds, coordinator of student organizations & leadership at USFSM, will serve as Tucker’s mentor throughout the fellowship. “We are thrilled that Corrine has been recognized for her efforts on campus and in our community,” said Dr. Terry Osborn, interim regional chancellor at USFSM. “Corrine is an incredibly bright and engaged student and has made a significant impact on our institution and on her classmates during her time at USF Sarasota-Manatee. We are so fortunate to have her as one of our students.” As a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow, Tucker will be a part of the first cohort to benefit from a completely re-designed fellowship. The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities. “The cultivation of community-committed leaders has never been more crucial,” said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. “We rebuilt the Newman Civic Fellowship experience because our country needs more people who know how to bring communities together for positive change,” he said. “We are thrilled to welcome this group of 273 exemplary students as the first cohort to participate in this new model.” The Newman Civic Fellowship is supported by the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation. The fellowship honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education. Tucker’s Newman Civic Fellowship supports USFSM’s mission of community engagement, which in turn will aid in the Carnegie classification process. “Corinne is a remarkable student and scholar. Her work models true community engagement in terms of mutual reciprocity and impactful collaborations with the greater community,” said Katie O’Connor, coordinator of service-learning and community engagement at USFSM. “As we work toward obtaining the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, Corrine’s recognition will not only be highlighted in the application, but will set USFSM apart from other institutions.” Universities bearing the “Carnegie Community Engaged” classification have demonstrated a commitment to quality teaching and learning as well as to their civic missions, including producing research to aid their communities. The classification is accorded to select colleges and universities by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The designation is a key goal outlined in USFSM’s strategic plan, “Focus on Quality 2020.” ### |
