SARASOTA, Fla. (March 17, 2017) – Dr. Fawn Ngo, an associate professor of criminology at USF Sarasota-Manatee, has been recognized with a USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy Faculty Research Award. The award, which comes with a $5,000 grant, recognizes research of women’s issues, scholarly discipline and overall contribution to the USF System. A professor from each of the system’s three campuses is presented with the award annually. Dr. Ngo was notified about her award last week. “I am very honored to receive this,” she said. Dr. Ngo was recognized for her research into the issue of stalking. Examining datasets collected nationally, Dr. Ngo has written extensively about the subject over the past five years, including the prevalence of stalking on college campuses. Studies suggest that one in 12 women in the United States have been victims of stalkers. “I’ve found that, overall, when the police do something, even something small, it almost always improves the situation,” she said. With the grant, Dr. Ngo will broaden her research to examine data that is collected internationally, specifically within Asian cultures. Dr. Ngo was notified about the award last week, which came as a surprise because she had not expected to hear about the winners until the end of the month. “The first thing I did was call my daughter, then I emailed Dr. (Jane) Rose to thank her because she wrote the recommendation letter,” she said, referring to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences. An awards dinner is scheduled April 6 in Tampa. On March 23, she will participate in a 30-minute interview with USF Foundation Communications.
