Encourages high school musical theater students to hone their craft

Tampa, Fla. – High school theater programs in the Tampa Bay area are invited to participate in the Straz Center for the Performing Arts’ Broadway Star of the Future Awards program, designed to encourage, recognize and honor excellence in high school musical theater performances through a constructive review process.
Participating high school programs have the opportunity to take part in high-quality educational experiences in dance, theater and music at the Patel Conservatory. Selected students, directors and others will also receive professional development, networking and performance opportunities. The goal of the program is to provide experiences and opportunities and to engage local families and community members in a celebration of educational theater.
After completing the application process, musical productions will be reviewed by a team of Tampa Bay area theater professionals, college faculty and industry experts who will provide feedback within a few weeks. Outstanding nominees will be invited to perform at the Broadway Star of the Future Awards showcase at the Straz Center on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 2 p.m.
Awards will be given in the following categories: Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Supporting Performer, Outstanding Director, Musical Director, Choreographer,
Outstanding Orchestra and Outstanding Technical Achievement. Other scholarships and awards to be determined.
Applications should be submitted at least three weeks before the performance, prior to Jan. 31, 2017 and are available at http://www.strazcenter.org/Arts-Education/Broadway-Star-of-the-Future. (This deadline has been extended from Jan. 9.) Musical theater productions should take place before May 7, 2017. A $150 per production application fee is required.
The Broadway Star of the Future Awards program is open to theater students in Hillsborough, Hernando, Pinellas, Pasco and Manatee Counties. It is the Tampa Bay area’s regional awards program affiliated with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) or the Jimmy™ Awards, named in honor of James M. Nederlander, legendary Broadway theater owner and producer. The Jimmy™ Award for Best Performance by an Actress and Best Performance by an Actor is awarded annually in New York City to two grand prize winners selected from a group of student performers representing participating professional theaters. In the Straz’ case, these two representatives will be selected from the adjudication for Broadway Star of the Future Awards and showcase performance.
