St. Petersburg, FL (April 6, 2015) – Shorecrest Thespian Troupe 3140 made history at the recent Florida State Thespian Festival March 28 in Tampa, FL. The troupe performed their fall musical Anything Goes for an audience of more than 2,500 in Morsani Hall. The performance earned a Superior rating from the State judges, the highest rating possible. Kylie Heyman [‘15], who starred as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, was also chosen to represent the District in the Festival’s Opening Ceremony Showcase. She went on to win the prestigious Jimmy Award of The National High School Musical Theater Awards; only one boy and one girl in the State receive the honor. With more than 8,000 participants, the Florida festival is the most competitive high school thespian festival in the world.

In addition to the many awards for the troupe members’ acting, Shorecrest also received two Playwriting Critic’s Choice Awards at the State Festival, thus a sweep of the category by playwriting students Alice Darrow [‘15] and Savannah Pearson [‘15]. Additional awards and Shorecrest thespian results are listed online at at www.shorecrest.org .

Shorecrest Thespian Troupe 3140 is co-sponsored by choreographer and dance instructor Cheryl Lee and theatre and playwriting instructor Bill Leavengood. Lee has trained with members of the Royal Ballet and the New York City Ballet and has won national awards for her choreography of tap, lyrical, jazz and musical theatre productions. Leavengood, an alumnus of Shorecrest Preparatory School, is a two-time Eugene O’Neill Award winning playwright. He has several off-Broadway plays to his credit, including Florida Crackers, which was part of Circle Repertory’s 20th Anniversary season.

Just off of their State Festival success, Shorecrest Thespians are busy preparing for their spring production of Mary Poppins. The show will open on Thursday, April 23 with additional shows on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. All three shows are at 7:30 pm in the Janet Root Theatre at Shorecrest Preparatory School.
